An injured bike passenger was driven over and killed at an accident scene on Silkaatsnek on Sunday night after motorists ignored emergency services’ accident warning signals.

An injured biker was driven over at the accident scene.

According to Jerry Bouwer of Hartbeespoort Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), the biker and his passenger were both injured at the R511/R513 crossing around 20:00. “HEMS was on scene quickly. The injured passenger was trying to crawl to the side of the road when a security vehicle drove over him, killing him instantly,” Bouwer said. HEMS secured the scene with cones and flashing emergency lights to warn motorists.
“The motorcycle driver was critically injured and lying in the middle of the road. We couldn’t move him immediately due to his serious head and possible neck injuries. While I was attending to the driver, motorists were speeding by, not heeding the accident scene where we had a critical patient and a body at the scene. Fourteen of our emergency cones were driven over.”
Bouwer accompanied the critically injured patient to the hospital. “I left my vehicle at the scene with emergency lights on to add additional warning signals to motorists. Despite all the efforts to get motorists to slow down, the scene became increasingly dangerous. Our paramedics had to leave the scene eventually when the police arrived because of the dangerous situation,” he said.
Bouwer said motorists’ behaviour at accident scenes is of great concern. This is the tragic outcome of motorists not slowing down at accident scenes, putting patients’ and emergency personnel’s lives at risk.”
