Removal of illegal vendors and structures will continue

Illegal vendors were removed and structures broken down
Following an operation to remove illegal vendors along the R511 in Hartbeespoort, the Madibeng Municipality said operations such as these would continue.
On Wednesday, 24 July 2024, SANRAL (South African National Roads Agency) and Madibeng’s Department of Human Settlement, Department of Waste Management and the Department of Tourism, Agriculture and Economic Development (LED) evicted and confiscated the goods of illegal traders who had set themselves up along the R511. The work was done with support from Madibeng’s Traffic Department and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“The street traders who had set up structures next to the road in Hartbeespoort had been informed about the by-laws and warned several times by municipal officials. They were also served with notices to remove their wares and structures or be forcibly removed. In August 2023, after being warned and served notices, they were forcibly removed, but they set up shop again within a few days. They were served notices again, which they did not heed. Last week, their goods were confiscated and destroyed at the Madibeng solid waste landfill site,” said municipal spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala.
“The municipal property opposite Hartmark was cleared with the help of Barplats’ Crocodile River Mine. There was an illegal recycling operation and squatting on the property. The homes behind it were also experiencing a high number of break-ins. Barplats assisted with removing rubble and structures. They cleared the bushes and tall grass which concealed the activities happening on the plot.”
Tshabalala said the work is continuing as there are still structures that need to be removed.
