Strict law enforcement on Hartbeespoort Dam this weekend
Boaters should be warned that there will be strict law enforcement on Hartbeespoort Dam during the Easter weekend.
The newly established Hartbeespoort Law Enforcement will be out on the dam in full force and no boat will be overseen. “We have had quite a few incidents of lawlessness and irresponsible behaviour on the water, and this will definitely now be addressed,” said Arthur Crewe, the official law enforcement officer on Hartbeespoort Dam.
“We expect a large number of boats on the water during the Easter weekend and we would like to advise skippers that all boats will be inspected for safety equipment, skipper licences, permits to operate etc. We are being extra vigilant taking into account recent fatal incidents on the dam,” Crewe said.
Four law enforcement boats will be deployed on the dam. “We warn boaters that we will be out in full force to ensure adherence to water and boat safety compliance. We urge boaters to keep a copy of their skipper licences at hand and ensure that all safety equipment adheres to requirements. We will also check skippers for sobriety and if anyone is found under the influence of alcohol, the boat will be removed from the water.”
Infringements will also be served to harbours and slipways that allow such boats to launch.
Law enforcement will also concentrate on skiers and wet bikes to ensure the safety of especially children.
“We ask boaters to be vigilant, respectful of others and to adhere to water rules. Let’s have an incident-free holiday weekend for everyone to enjoy.”
NSRI asks for safe boating
Hartbeespoort NSRI urges water users on Hartbeespoort Dam to be careful, vigilant and be safe this Easter weekend.
“The NSRI is preparing for a busy weekend on the dam and we ask dam users to ensure that all safety equipment is in place and that emergency items are at hand in case of emergencies. Take warm clothing for children, water and other necessities that might be needed if you get stuck on the dam,” Arthur Crewe of the NSRI said.
“We ask boaters to be extra vigilant, respect the regulations and avoid endangering lives. Skippers are not allowed to drink alcohol and law enforcement will be on the dam to ensure this. Have a lovely and safe weekend!”
