Residents in Hartbeespoort who receive their electricity supply from the City of Tshwane are warned not to fall victim to criminals who use the current prepaid meter replacement programme to scam Tshwane customers.

Residents in Hartbeespoort and surrounding areas who receive their electricity supply from the City of Tshwane are warned not to fall victim to criminals who use the current prepaid meter replacement programme to scam Tshwane customers.
The municipality, like all municipalities in the country is busy with software upgrading of prepaid meters. The current prepaid electricity meters will stop vending electricity in November 2024 when the token identity numbers used for the system expire.
Some meters only need a software upgrade while older meters need to be replaced. According to City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba, the municipality received reports of customers being approached by bogus municipal field officers, demanding money for new meters.
“If a meter is not upgradeable, the City will replace that meter at no cost to the customer. Customers are cautioned about criminals who may take advantage of the token identifier (TID) rollover process.”
