Workers in daily fear of robbers

Workers in the De Wildt area ‘walk’ in fear daily as robbers have been targeting pedestrians on their way to and from work.
A group of men overpower pedestrians on the M21 from De Wildt to Mmakau, rob them at gunpoint and often leave them tied up in the bushes. Another armed group pretends to give workers a lift and then kidnaps and robs them.
“We are struggling. There are no taxis on this road and we have to walk to work. You have to look over your shoulder at all times and cannot hitchhike. We are scared all the way to and from work. Someone gets robbed every day. We wish the police would patrol this road,” a worker told Kormorant.
Another told Kormorant, men jumped out of the bushes, grabbed him and tied him up. “They pointed a gun at me and dragged me deep into the bushes, took my clothes and tied my hands. They then left me deep in the bushes. I struggled to get to a nearby house where the residents called for help.”
According to another worker, he accepted a lift and was driven onto the first dirty road where two suspects pulled out firearms and demanded his cellphone, money and shoes. “We have seen these men before. We want the police to catch them.” The workers did not want to be named for fear of retaliation.
The Mmakau police Visible Policing Commander Captain Stephens Masilo said the police are tracing suspects. “Police are looking for robbers who’ve committed multiple robberies in the area.” He called on motorists and community members to be vigilant when driving or walking around the De Wildt area.
