Young pilot dies in plane crash in lion park

A 24-year-old pilot died and a passenger was critically injured when a light aircraft crashed on the grounds of the Lion & Safari Park in Hartbeespoort on Thursday morning.


Mickyla Steyn was declared dead at the scene. The passenger was airlifted in critical condition to a hospital.
According to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), the aircraft, a Cessna 210, departed from Lanseria International Airport (FALA) and crashed moments after take-off.
“There were two on board the aircraft (pilot and passenger), with the pilot fatally injured. The passenger was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital,” Sisa Majola, spokesperson for the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID), said.
North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, said the police were investigating a culpable homicide case. “Investigations into the matter, including by the Civil Aviation Authority, are underway.”
