Department blames “community disruptions” for accident
Following a fatal accident on the R566/Rosslyn road at De Wildt last month, caused by missing traffic signs, the North West Roads Department said this week that the missing traffic signs were due to the contractor’s termination of the contract.
A 32-year-old mother died and her baby was injured after colliding with a truck at the busy R566/De Wildt intersection where stop signs had been removed during construction. The woman was identified as Sergeant Sarah Maswanganye, a detective at Rietgat police station. The impact of the collision caused Maswanganye’s car to burst into flames. She was trapped in her Ford Figo.
Spokesperson for the department, Lerato Gambu said the R566 was being upgraded and the contractor terminated the contract as a result of community disruptions.
“We have requested the engineer to assess and indicate if the road is safe for use in order for the district to assist by reinstating the road signs and markings while another contractor is commissioned.”
To date, stop signs have not been replaced at this dangerous and busy junction.
