Majakaneng guardians of nature
A group of Majakaneng residents near Brits have made remarkable strides in conserving the area’s natural beauty by looking after the Magaliesberg mountain range in the Majakaneng area.
The Magaliesburg Mountains Rangers were founded in Majakaneng in 2021 and the Rangers In Mission conservation company has emerged as a beacon of hope in the battle against environmental degradation. “Focused on addressing the threat of alien invasive plants, snare patrols, trail building and maintenance, the rangers are laying a solid foundation for sustainable conservation practices within the Magaliesberg region. Their work is vital in ensuring the ecological balance of this beautiful landscape remains intact,” says Hendrick Baloi, founder of the Rangers.
Recently, these conscientious rangers successfully removed 261 snares from key locations at Hammakop, Catles Gorge, and Maretlwane during patrols. “This significant effort not only protects local wildlife but also enhances the natural habitat for future generations to enjoy.”
In addition to their conservation work, the Magaliesberg Mountains Rangers manage the Majakaneng Hiking Trails, which offer three 10km, 5km, and 3km trails for outdoor enthusiasts.
From 3 to 9 December the Rangers will host the 4th “Hiking For Hope” campaign. This noble initiative aims to raise school shoes for underprivileged children in the Majakaneng community. By participating in the hiking trails, hikers get to experience the stunning mountain landscapes and contribute to a worthy cause that enriches the lives of local children.
“Because of these rangers’ commitment to the environment, it sets an example for the whole community. Join the rangers on the trails, support their initiatives, and be part of a movement that hopes to foster a better future for both nature and the Majakaneng community.
